Few things lift the mood in winter like a glowing tree, a twinkling porch and a string of lights in the front window. But the festive season also puts extra demand on your sockets, cables and outdoor connections, often all at once. A little preparation goes a long way, and most of it takes minutes rather than hours.
Here is a practical guide to keeping your home bright, safe and ready for the celebrations.
Check Your Lights Before You Hang Them
Decorations spend most of the year in a loft or cupboard, so give them a quick inspection before they go up. Plug each set in and look over the full length of the cable. Frayed or cracked insulation, loose wires, damaged plugs and scorch marks are all signs that a set should be replaced rather than repaired. If a bulb fails, replace it with one of the same type and rating.
Check the plug and any transformer or control box too. These should sit securely in the socket and be kept somewhere dry and well ventilated, away from curtains and other flammable decorations.
Choose the Right Extension Lead
Wherever you can, plug lights directly into a wall socket. But a Christmas tree, a window display and a few seasonal gadgets can soon outnumber the sockets in a room, and a good extension lead is the sensible answer when you need one.
- One lead per wall socket. Never plug extension leads into each other, as this makes overloading easy.
- Mind the total load. A standard UK socket is rated at 13A, so keep the combined power of everything on a lead within that limit.
- Unwind cable reels fully. A coiled reel can overheat when it is carrying a heavy load.
- Keep leads visible. Avoid running them under rugs or carpets, where damage and heat can go unnoticed.
Look for leads with built in surge protection, especially if the same corner powers lights, a router and a TV. Our range of extension leads and cable reels includes standard trailing sockets, heavy duty leads, surge protected options and longer reels for garden use, so there is a suitable lead for most set ups.
Taking Your Display Outdoors
Outdoor lights bring a real festive welcome, but outdoors is a much tougher environment than a living room. Rain, frost and wind can all find their way into connections that were never designed to cope with them.
Only use lights that are clearly marked as suitable for outdoor use, and check the label for the IP rating. As a rough guide, IP44 means protection against splashing water. Wherever possible, keep plugs and transformers indoors, even when the lights themselves are outdoor rated, and avoid trapping cables in doors or windows.
All outdoor lights should be connected through a socket protected by a 30mA RCD. If you put up a display every year, it is worth asking a registered electrician to fit a weatherproof, RCD protected outdoor socket. If you do need an extension lead outside, choose one rated for outdoor use, as indoor leads are not built to cope with the weather.
If you are planning permanent lighting for your home and garden as well as seasonal decorations, our outdoor lighting range covers wall lights, flood lights, lanterns, bollards and recessed garden lights, so your festive display can sit alongside lighting that works all year round. Any fixed outdoor lighting should be installed by a qualified electrician.
Let a Timer Do the Work
Switch festive lights off and unplug them before bed or when you leave the house. A timer takes the effort out of this: set the on and off times once and it does the rest every day, which also helps keep energy use down across the month.
For outdoor use, the Masterplug IP54 lockable weatherproof enclosure with a four socket extension lead and plug in timer is designed for temporary outdoor power, keeping the connections protected from dust and splashing water. As with any outdoor supply, make sure it is plugged into an RCD protected socket.
Don't Forget Your Smoke Alarms
Decorations, candles and extra electrical equipment all change the fire risk in a home, even for a few weeks. Test your smoke alarms before the celebrations begin and replace any that are faulty or past their recommended lifespan. You can browse our fire safety range for smoke and heat alarms.

Festive Electrical Safety FAQs
Can I plug an extension lead into another extension lead?
No. Chaining leads together makes overloading more likely. Use a single lead that is long enough, or one with more sockets.
Is it safe to leave Christmas lights on overnight?
It is safer to switch them off and unplug them when you go to bed or leave the house. A timer can handle the switching, but unplugging at night is still good practice.
Are LED Christmas lights safer than traditional bulbs?
LEDs generally run cooler, use less power and have no glass filament lamps to break, which is why they are often recommended. They still need checking for damaged cables and plugs.
What IP rating should outdoor lights have?
Use lights marked as suitable for outdoor use and check the label. IP44 is a common benchmark for protection against splashing water.
How do I know if my extension lead is overloaded?
Warning signs include a warm plug or lead, a burning smell, discolouration or a tripping circuit. Unplug it, reduce the load and replace the lead if there is any damage.
Enjoy the Season, Safely
A few simple checks make the difference between a stress-free festive display and an avoidable problem. Inspect your lights, choose the right leads, protect outdoor connections and let a timer handle the switching.
