Type A detects AC and pulsating DC residual currents, the minimum type for most modern installations under BS 7671. Its bi-directional design allows supply to either set of terminals, so it can be used where current may flow in either direction, such as circuits fed by solar PV inverters or battery storage. At 16A with a C curve characteristic it is typically used on immersion heaters, storage heaters, boilers and small appliance radials.
