How does an electric radiator actually work?
At its heart, an electric radiator does one simple job: it turns electricity into heat, then lets that heat out steadily rather than all at once. How it does that depends on what's inside. Oil filled models heat a special fluid that holds warmth well and releases it gently over time, which is why they often feel so cosy long after they've switched off.
Dry thermal and ceramic core radiators work a bit differently, heating a dense internal element that stores heat and gives it back with real stability. Then there are panel convectors, which are all about speed, pushing warm air into the room quickly so you feel the difference almost straight away.
None of this needs to feel complicated. The main thing to know is that every type is really just striking a different balance between how fast it warms up and how long it stays warm once it's off. Choosing the right size and wattage
Here's the truth: the finish, the colour, the smart features, none of it matters much if the wattage is wrong. Get this bit right first, and everything else falls into place.
As a rough starting point, a modern, well insulated UK room typically needs around 100 watts per square metre of floor space. Older properties, or spaces that lose heat more easily like conservatories, can need considerably more, sometimes up to 150 watts per square metre. So a 12 square metre bedroom in a fairly standard house might suit a 1200 watt radiator comfortably, while that same size room in a draughtier, older property could do better with 1500 watts.

A radiator that's slightly oversized for the room will reach temperature quicker and then settle into a gentler rhythm, which tends to feel more comfortable day to day and can actually work out more efficient in practice than one that's constantly straining to keep up.
