One of the first questions every new EV owner asks is simple: what's this actually going to cost me? The honest answer is that it depends enormously on where you charge. Plug in at home overnight on the right tariff and a full charge can cost less than a coffee. Rely on a motorway rapid charger and that same charge can cost more than a tank of petrol.

To help you budget properly, we've broken down the real cost of charging an electric car in the UK across the three main options: home charging, on-street lamppost charging, and public rapid or ultra-rapid charging. All prices below reflect typical UK rates from July 2026, but energy prices move often, so treat these as a guide rather than a guarantee and always check current tariffs before you rely on the numbers.

Before the figures, it helps to know what you're comparing:

 uses a wallbox charger (usually 7kW) installed at your property, billed through your household electricity tariff.

 is aimed at drivers without a driveway, using slower chargers (typically 3 to 22kW) built into lampposts or dedicated bollards.

Home Charging: The Cheapest Option by Far

If you can charge at home, it's almost always your cheapest route. There are two ways to do it.

 Under the Ofgem energy price cap running from 1 July to 30 September 2026, the average unit rate for electricity is 26.11p per kWh (Direct Debit, England, Scotland and Wales). Charging a typical 60kWh EV battery from empty at this rate costs around £15.67.

 This is where the real savings appear. Tariffs such as Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Go offer a cheap overnight window, generally somewhere between 7p and 9p per kWh depending on your region and the specific tariff, compared with roughly 26p per kWh on a standard rate. Charging the same 60kWh battery overnight on one of these tariffs costs somewhere in the region of £4.50, a saving of over 70% compared with a standard tariff.

To get the most from an EV tariff, you'll generally need a smart meter and either a smart home charger or a car that supports scheduled charging, so it draws power automatically during the cheap window rather than whenever you plug in.

Lamppost and On-Street Charging: A Convenient Middle Ground

If you don't have off-street parking, on-street charging through networks like Ubitricity (Shell Recharge) or char.gy is often the only realistic way to charge overnight. It's more expensive than a home wallbox but still notably cheaper than a rapid charger.

Typical pricing sits between roughly 39p and 59p per kWh, with several networks running a day and night split, for example char.gy currently charges around 39p per kWh overnight and 59p per kWh during the day. Charging a 60kWh battery from empty on an on-street charger therefore typically costs somewhere between £23 and £35, depending on the network, location and time of day.

Public Rapid and Ultra-Rapid Charging: Fast, but the Most Expensive

Rapid (50kW+) and ultra-rapid (150kW+) chargers are built for speed, not economy, and you pay a premium for that convenience. Across the UK's major networks, pay-as-you-go pricing has ranged from around 61p to 92p per kWh in the months leading up to summer 2026:

 Tesla's Supercharger network, open to most EVs, from around 61 to 65p per kWh

 Gridserve, Osprey and GeniePoint, generally 74 to 85p per kWh

 InstaVolt and BP Pulse, up to around 89 to 92p per kWh on pay-as-you-go

Using an average rapid charging rate of roughly 76p per kWh, a full charge of a 60kWh battery costs around £45.60. At the most expensive end of the market, that same charge can cost over £55.

A few things can bring this down. Charging apps and network memberships (such as BP Pulse's subscription or Octopus Electroverse) typically shave 10 to 20% off the pay-as-you-go price, and only charging to 80% rather than 100% saves both time and money, since charging speed drops significantly beyond that point.

Here's how the numbers stack up for a full charge of a typical 60kWh family EV battery, along with the equivalent cost per mile based on an average efficiency of 3.5 miles per kWh:

 around 7 to 9p per kWh, roughly £4.50 to fully charge, approximately 2p per mile

 26.11p per kWh, roughly £15.67 to fully charge, approximately 7.5p per mile

 around 39 to 59p per kWh, roughly £23 to £35 to fully charge, approximately 11 to 17p per mile

 around 61 to 92p per kWh, roughly £37 to £55 to fully charge, approximately 17 to 26p per mile

For comparison, a typical petrol car doing around 45 miles per gallon, at a UK average pump price of roughly 150p per litre in July 2026, costs approximately 15p per mile to run. That makes home charging on an off-peak tariff several times cheaper than petrol, standard-rate home charging still comfortably cheaper, and rapid charging roughly on par with or slightly more expensive than petrol, which is why it's best used for top-ups on longer trips rather than as your everyday charging method.

 It's cheaper than any public option, even on a standard tariff.
